Something I feel is really important to me when going on a big trip is keeping a diary of all the details of each day as I know in a couple of weeks, months or years I will have forgotten the details of what we did and all the fun memories. Even now when I am going through my diaries to write posts for this blog I read things that we got up to to my husband that we had both forgotten about and seem unbelievable. If you are planning a big holiday somewhere and would like to do the same I feel it is one of those things that you will never regret.

Keeping up with a travel journal on the road

Sometimes on the road finding the time in between all the adventures can be hard to keep up with your diary but I would sometimes take it to dinner or breakfast to quickly write a few sentences or if we were having a 'rest' day then I would catch up then...it's one of those things that you will find time for if you truly want to do it, I actually really enjoy doing it. We went to Sri Lanka for a month this year with our two children under four and I still managed to do it everyday so it is totally possible. People always see me writing in it and say something along the lines of 'are you keeping a travel journal? That's a lovely idea I wish I'd been doing that/done that etc' so don't be one of those people, go prepared! Why old school pen and paper you might ask? There is just something I love about physically writing in a book about holiday memories. I spend so much time working on my laptop that I feel it almost separates work and personal and I can be in a different headspace sitting with a pen in my hand and there is something that I just love about writing, the time out it gives you to reflect on your day, your experiences etc, plus you can stick in tickets or other things that are of interest next to the days entry that is relevant. Since my first backpacking trip I have always packed the same kit for keeping my diaries, it's simple but effective. I favour a ringbound, kraft style scrapbook similar to this one

I then always write the date of my new entry in a white gel pen like this one, it just helps it stand out and is always a nice way to start.

I use a standard black biro so whatever you have or prefer, my favourite is a narrow tip Bic like this one as it allows me to write smaller maximising the space.

Finally I always take a pack of Sticky glue dots like these ones so I can stick any tickets or leaflets that I want to add to my journal in on the go.

I also try and take a picture of the pages every few days on my phone just incase something where to happen to my diary and I lose all those amazing details and memories then I have a copy of it. And that's it, only a few bits but bits that will help you make and keep memories of a lifetime! The links above should take you to the products on Amazon, they are affiliate links but that won't affect you in anyway. If you would like to know more about the kit I take or tips just let me know.
